I love games like this where you have to kind of figure it out and there's a random element and you just kind of have to go with it. Super cool man!
Hello PseudoPStupid, thanks for playing! I saw you laugh a number of times and really enjoyed that you understood the "Killing Joke" achievement reference.
I'm sorry for the difficulty. At times it really felt painful as a dev to see you struggle so hard in the first two levels. And sometimes you were so close. You had an exploding box lined up with loads of enemies around it, then you exclaimed that you like the laser only to not fire and then expend ammo and lose health. You were close to figuring out how the rats move (they jump in the direction that they are facing) and then you waived it off again. :)
Sorry for the confusion in the beginning. The game is play in browser and you downloaded the manual. The full screen setting works well in the browser though. Regarding distribution: It's in the browser as that's the least hassle for everyone to play. There is also an Android build on google play.
It is very clear to me that 1. The room reveal has to happen faster and line of sight not be blocked by enemies. (This will mitigate the rushing into rooms effect. This is so deadly.) 2. There have to be some doorways that are wider than one space in order to avoid so much fighting in the doorways.

This game is so sick. The art, the music, the gameplay it's all so cool and dripping in 8 bit style. I really appreciate the inclusion of a game manual. It really takes me back to the old days of gaming. I would love to see more ways for the weapons to interact with the environment for more interesting and tactical kills. This may have been a design choice for you not to include it but a wait turn option to allow enemies to move a turn without moving the character themselves would be a nice mechanic. The difficulty seems to be in a pretty good spot with players being rewarded for not just rushing into things. The procedural generation also keeps every run fresh as well as the inclusion of "missions" to give you extra objectives while playing. A fantastic game and you should be very proud of your work! Looking forward to more from you :)

I really can't gage the difficulty anymore - desensitised by too much development. It should be fair and deterministic. Every combat is a small puzzle that can mostly be solved in different ways. The enemies exhibit predictable behaviour. And then you act accordingly and blam away at, blow up, straight-up murder the enemy troopers...

Great game, Hawkwork. The aesthetics and sound were spot on, and the gameplay mechanics were a fantastic idea. It was challenging, but it wasn't so hard that I didn't want to continue. I'm pretty sure I played all of the levels because it looped back to the first one. My only gripe with it was that the webpage scrolled every time I pressed the down and up arrow keys, and I had some difficulties on the title screen getting the game to play. I would definitely find a way to freeze website controls while the game is in focus if you decide to flesh this game out further. Other than that, I was very pleased with the experience. Amazing work!

I found a way to fix the scrolling bug. Added some more different enemies also. But there are still a lot of bugs, I'm afraid.
That's awesome to hear. The scrolling bug was the most important one to fix in my opinion, so I'm glad that you were able to get it taken care of. I'll have to try this one out again once you're able to get a little more done on it. 🙂
